I am an amateur bird-watcher, with a special interest in videography. My aim is to capture birds in their natural habitat on video / film. The geographical area that I concentrate on is in the Oriental Region, especially of the Sunda shelf. Naturally, being based in Singapore, most of my forays are into Singapore, and Malaysia (especially Peninsular Malaysia) and also into Thailand. However, I have gone birding in many other parts of the world.
My interest started way back in 1974 when I became an active member of the Bird Study Group, Malayan Nature Society (Singapore branch). Subsequently, I took over as the Chairman of the BSG, and was then actively involved in bird-ringing. Then when I began my specialist training, I left the birding scene to concentrate on my profession. Between then and 1996, I was an arm-chair naturalist. Since 1996, I have been lured back, especially when I took over the Presidency of the Nature Society (Singapore) for 2 years.
Professionally, I am a consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist in the Gleneagle Hospital, Singapore, having left the National University Hospital in 2004. I am also a adjunct Professor in both NUS and NTU, and was the Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore. My special area of research is in infertility (especially male infertility) and nuclear reprogramming; I pioneered the IVF program in Asia in 1982.
